Frequently asked questions.

How much does it cost to convert a skoolie?

Bus build cost can range drastically depending on what amenities one includes in their build. As a minimalist, I built my bus to have my basic needs met while also making sure I didn’t skimp on comfort. My bus conversion cost was approx. 4k not including the cost of the bus, and 7k including what I paid for my bus.

What amenities will be included in your layout?

The layout I chose for my bus includes a twin XL bed, a kitchen (which includes a propane stove top, a sink, and mini fridge), a fully functional shower (yes, with hot water), a propane heater, a couch, and overhead storage on both sides of the bus. Of course there is unlimited creative potential so these amenities can be expanded or contracted.

How do you get utilities?

The buses will be run on 100% solar energy. My personal bus has 500 total watts of solar installed on the roof which powers the appliances including the water pump, outlets, and lights. There is a 30 gallon fresh water tank which provides fresh water for the kitchen sink and the shower. I live on a lot where I have access to refill the tank when it runs out (about once every 2 weeks), but before I lived on the lot I refilled my water tank at local refil stations or a friendly neighbors water hose.

How does the electrical work?

I have a 200aH battery bank that is recharged by the solar panels on the roof. The battery bank powers a 3000 watt inverter to power my 120v appliances (120v outlets and 120v lights), and a 12v breaker that powers my 12v appliances (my water pump).

How does the plumbing work?

I have a 12v on demand water pump that circulates water throughout the bus to the sink, the propane fueled tankless water heater, and the shower. The water is pumped through a combination of PEX pipe and copper pipes.
